#34 How to find a gas leak

Gas leaks can be very dangerous. If you suspect a gas leak in your home, it’s important to act on it as soon as possible. If you’re not confident with how to detect a gas leak, contact us and we’ll be able to assess the situation for you.

If you would like to try to detect a gas leak for yourself, you can follow the instructions we’ve set out below.

(You’ll note in the video above, that a store-bought solution is used. At home, you can use every day washing up liquid and water to make a similar solution that will work just as well).

How to find a gas leak

1. Follow your nose

The first indicator of a gas leak is usually the smell. Manufacturers add a smell to gas to help you more easily detect if there’s a gas leak. Follow your nose to find where you think the leak might be coming from.

2. Apply the solution

Whether you use a store-bought solution or create your own using dish soap, the next step is to apply the solution to the joints where you suspect a gas leak. Use a cloth, sponge, or paintbrush to generously apply the solution to the connections.

3. Watch

The next step is to watch and see if any bubbles form where you have applied the solution. A general guide to go by is – the larger the bubble, the large the leak. You’re looking for large bubbles or a frothy reaction. Wherever you see this, there’s a gas leak.
