#29 How to seal around your kitchen sink
Is your kitchen sink a breeding ground for germs?
The kitchen is the heart of the home. It’s where families gather to enjoy good food and company. But did you know that one little problem can cause a major issue down the road? Silicone, unfortunately, doesn’t last a lifetime. When it needs replacing, you’ll start to notice gaps in the silicone, where water, food scraps, and other debris can easily fall through or get stuck.
If your sink isn’t sealed, you can find nasty problems like mould, bacteria overgrowth, decay, and water damage. Ensuring that your sink is fully sealed is a priority in your kitchen to avoid costly repairs, the spreading of bacteria, and even cross-contamination.
If you would like to be able to caulk your kitchen sink, watch the above video for a step by step tutorial on how to get the job done quickly and professionally.
How to seal your kitchen sink:
Out with the old, in with the new
You’ll want to make sure all the old silicone is removed to ensure you get a clean, neat repair. If you leave bits of silicone behind, it can result in a poor seal and even bacteria growth.
Tape off the area
Cover your kitchen bench with tape to provide yourself with a user-friendly workspace. This will protect your sink and your bench from silicone, as well as give you a very visible working area.
Seal away
Seal the space with your silicone, making sure to run a neat line between your sink and your bench, filling the gap. Then neaten the line, by using the tip of your finger (wear gloves!).
Remove the tape
While the silicone is still wet, pull up the tape and throw it away. Then leave the silicone to dry.
This simple, easy fix is a great way to make sure that your kitchen sink is protected from the advances of mould and bacteria growth. Easy, cheap, and effective, this is an ideal DIY project – but if you would like a professional to handle it for you, simply contact us and we can take care of it for you!
