#27 How to seal around your shower base

Silicone issues causing a mess? Are you having issues with the silicone in your shower or bath? Don’t worry! We can help!

Silicone is an important part of your bathroom as it helps to keep a watertight seal, avoiding a mouldy, mildewy mess that can cost you a lot of money in the future. It’s important for the silicone seal in your bathroom to be in one piece, without any flaking. If you’re finding that your shower silicone is starting to come apart, it might be time to replace it.

If you would like to fix the silicone in your shower by yourself, watch the above video, or check out our guide below.

Remove old silicone

The first thing you will need to do is remove the old silicone, which can be done using a variety of different tools. The video above suggests a window scraper is the easiest, however, there are specific tools you can find at your local hardware store if you would prefer.

Make incisions along the bottom and the top and pull out the old silicone. Next, use a solvent from your hardware store that is specifically designed to remove adhesives and sealants. Vacuum up any remaining pieces of silicone.

Lay new silicone

Your next step is to get your silicone gun and lay your new strip of silicone down, from one end of the shower base to the next. Use a damp rag or flat, clean surface to smooth the silicone, so you end up with a neat finish. It’s important not to use your fingers so that the bacteria from your fingers doesn’t get into the silicone and cause it to mould prematurely.

Repeat this process until you’re finished. Back out of the shower without touching any of your silicone, then leave it to dry for 24 hours.

By following these simple steps, you can easily accomplish this fun DIY project!
